There are a few important facts I feel must be clarified in response to some common misunderstandings about mobile barbers and hairdressers.

The following applies to all
mobile beauty and hair services:

Mobile services are built around convenience and personalised care.

While offerings, availability, and pricing vary by provider, it's important to understand how and why mobile barbers, hairdressers, and beauty professionals operate differently from traditional salon settings.

Some may offer introductory discounts to new clients or loyalty programs for regular bookings.

These promotions vary based on the business model, frequency of service, and client location.

Below is a list of commonly misunderstood aspects regarding mobile services, especially in relation to pricing, travel, time commitment, and expectations.

1. Mobile Services Offer Convenience - Not Cheapness

Mobile hairdressers and barbers exist to provide convenience by coming to your home, workplace, aged care facility, or event.
They save you travel time—but this comes with its own set of challenges.

2. Service Availability Varies by Demand & Location

Not all mobile professionals are available in every suburb.
Many cover specific regions based on local demand, and some are willing to travel further than others—usually for an additional travel fee.

3. Travel Time & Costs Matter

Mobile barbers and hairdressers often charge a travel fee to account for time, fuel, tolls, parking, weather delays, and return-to-base logistics.
These are real business costs that salon-based services do not incur.

4. NDIS Does Not Cover Hair Services

For clarity: the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) does not provide funding or reimbursement for personal hair services.

5. Haircuts Take Time & Care

A professional haircut done with scissors can take between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on hair length, thickness, and desired style.
This includes consultation, setup, and clean-up time.

6. Mobile Professionals See Fewer Clients Daily

Unlike salons, mobile providers can only see a limited number of clients per day due to travel time between appointments—this significantly impacts earning capacity.

7. Not Always Cheaper Than a Salon

While some assume mobile services should cost less, they’re often on par or slightly more than in-salon visits.
Remember, salons often have junior staff or apprentices assisting with services—mobile providers operate solo, offering a one-on-one experience.

Vehicle wear and tear, insurance, fuel, travel time, tolls, and stock costs (especially for colour, perms, and treatments) add up quickly. Products must be stored, stocked, and maintained just like in a salon.
